Scholarships and Awards

The Department of Political Science is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the academic awards and scholarships listed below.  Applications are due in the Department Office (94-303) by 4:30pm Monday, May 21, 2012.  You may obtain an application form from the Department Office, view it as a web page, or download it in MS Word format.  Contact Dr. Hargis (909/869-3882; This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.   • John H. Esterline Scholarship in Political Science ($1,000)

    The Esterline Scholarship is awarded annually to an advanced-level student of good character who is majoring in political science at Cal Poly Pomona. The student must have completed no more than 170 and no fewer than 135 units of university work at the end of Spring Quarter. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum 3.2) and a demonstrated interest in international affairs. The scholarship must be used for study at Cal Poly Pomona. The scholarship is awarded from an endowment fund at Cal Poly Pomona established through the generous contributions of the family, friends, and colleagues of Professor John H. Esterline.

    The Esterline Scholarship is given in tribute to Dr. Esterline who, after a distinguished career in diplomacy for the United States, served as chair and then as a regular member of the Department of Political Science at Cal Poly Pomona until his death in 1996.

  • Bruce E. Wilson Memorial Scholarship ($500)

    The Bruce Wilson Scholarship is given annually to a student who is majoring political science at Cal Poly Pomona on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum of 3.3), contributions to the Department of Political Science and/or the University, and financial need. Applicants must be of junior or senior standing.

    The scholarship is a tribute to one of the founding members of the Political Science Department, whose ideas, enterprise, and labors should always be remembered. Professor Wilson was the chief driving force behind both the founding and the first years of the Department's development.

  • George P. Hart Scholarship ($500)

    The scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum 3.2) and a demonstrated interest in community affairs.

    The student must have completed no more than 170 and no fewer than 135 units of university work at the end of Spring Quarter.  The award is to be used for books and/or tuition during the student's senior year at Cal Poly Pomona.

  • The scholarship is a memorial to George Hart who devoted thirty years to Cal Poly Pomona as a member of the Political Science Department and as Associate Dean in the School of Arts (now the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences).   He served on the Academic Senate from 1983 to 1995, acting as chair from 1987 through 1989.  His life serves as a tribute to the pursuit of academic excellence and dedicated leadership.

  • The Sean Yu Student Leadership Scholarship (in honor of Professor David Speak)  ($1,000)

    The Sean Yu Student Leadership Scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the Political Science major who provides leadership to student organizations during their time at Cal Poly Pomona.  Of particular salience will be activity in the Political Science Club, the Model UN, the Mock Trial and ASI.  The student must be a Political Science major and have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 both cumulative and in the major.  

    With the general application form, the student should submit a resume, including the student’s activities and the names of at least two references familiar with his or her leadership activities.

  • Dr. G. Sidney Silliman Scholarship ($1,000)

    The award is for the best senior thesis by a political science major in the area of public policy and endangered species protection.  A thesis focused on public policy and threatened or endangered species within the California Desert Conservation Area will be recognized as especially meritorious.  A minimum of one thesis in the designated area is sufficient to select an awardee.

    Please submit the general application with a copy of their thesis.  The thesis must be have been completed during spring, fall or winter quarter preceding the spring award year, i.e. for a Spring 2012 award students must have completed the thesis during spring 2011, fall 2011 or winter 2012.  The student must also demonstrate academic achievement in the Political Science Department.


  • Fall Awards

    The following three scholarships are awarded to incoming students and applications are due early in the fall quarter.

  • Political Science Scholarship for Pomona High School Graduates
  • This scholarship is offered annually to one outstanding high school student from each of the high schools located in the city of Pomona or in the Pomona Unified School District.  The $300 scholarship awards are provided subsequent to actual enrollment. Scholarship recipients must enroll at Cal Poly Pomona as a political science major. If there is only one person from a high school that meets the criteria, this person will automatically be awarded the scholarship. If there is more than one person from a high school that meets the criteria for the scholarship, the applicant with the highest grade point average from that school will receive the scholarship. Grade Point Averages will be evaluated up to the first semester of a student’s senior year in high school.

    Target Schools: All high schools in the city of Pomona or the Pomona Unified School District: Ganesha High School, Garey High School, Pomona High School, Park West High School, Pomona Catholic High School, Diamond Ranch High School, I-Poly, Quest, City of Knowledge, School of Art and Enterprise.

  • BNI-Misner Endowed Scholarship for Political Science
  • The BNI-Misner Endowed Scholarship for Political Science is awarded annually to an incoming student enrolled full-time at Cal Poly in the Political Science Department.  The $750.00 scholarship is awarded based on the applicants’ essays describing their interest and activities in school and/or their community (i.e. work on political campaigns or other community service) and their interest and/or activity in politics (i.e. student government) while in high school; and outlining their career aspirations.  Financial need will also be considered in the selection, and this information should be described in a cover letter.

  • BNI-Misner Endowed Scholarship for Political Science Honor Students
  • The BNI-Misner Endowed Scholarship for Political Science Honor Students is awarded annually to an incoming student enrolled full-time at Cal Poly in the Political Science Department who have a GPA of 3.6 or higher and have applied to the Honors College.  The scholarship is for $1,000.  Contact the Honors College about the application process.
