The student must have demonstrated a commitment to community service. The student must, as well, have an interest in one of the following geographical areas: the Middle East (especially Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Iran), South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), or Southeast Asia (especially the Philippines). The award is funded through the generosity of the University Club of Claremont.

  • John H. Esterline Scholarship in Political Science ($1,000)

The Esterline Scholarship is awarded annually to an advanced-level student of good character who is majoring in political science at Cal Poly Pomona. The student must have completed no more than 170 and no fewer than 135 units of university work at the end of Spring Quarter. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum 3.2) and a demonstrated interest in international affairs. The scholarship must be used for study at Cal Poly Pomona. The scholarship is awarded from an endowment fund at Cal Poly Pomona established through the generous contributions of the family, friends, and colleagues of Professor John H. Esterline.

The Esterline Award and the Esterline Scholarship are given in tribute to Dr. Esterline who, after a distinguished career in diplomacy for the United States, served as chair and then as a regular member of the Department of Political Science at Cal Poly Pomona until his death in 1996.

  • Bruce E. Wilson Memorial Scholarship ($500)

The Bruce Wilson Scholarship is given annually to a student who is majoring political science at Cal Poly Pomona on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum of 3.3), contributions to the Department of Political Science and/or the University, and financial need. Applicants must be of junior or senior standing.

The scholarship is a tribute to one of the founding members of the Political Science Department, whose ideas, enterprise, and labors should always be remembered. Professor Wilson was the chief driving force behind both the founding and the first years of the Department's development.

  • George P. Hart Scholarship ($500)

The scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of overall grade point average (minimum 3.2) and a demonstrated interest in community affairs.
The student must have completed no more than 170 and no fewer than 135 units of university work at the end of Spring Quarter.  The award is to be used for books and/or tuition during the student's senior year at Cal Poly Pomona.

  • The scholarship is a memorial to George Hart who devoted thirty years to Cal Poly Pomona as a member of the Political Science Department and as Associate Dean in the School of Arts (now the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences).   He served on the Academic Senate from 1983 to 1995, acting as chair from 1987 through 1989.  His life serves as a tribute to the pursuit of academic excellence and dedicated leadership.

The Department also makes additional awards.  For more information, see our policies on awards.  Finally, the Rotary Club of Pomona is looking for motivated and qualified juniors and seniors to apply for a One Academic-Year Scholarship for Study Abroad. Applications are available online.
