Warped Tour back for 15th year

POMONA – The 2009 Warped Tour, now in its 15th year, has given a lot of bands their start.

“It’s great some bands recognize that,” said founder Kevin Lyman. “They said, `Hey, that gave us the place to perform.’ It taught us to be a live band.”

Coming back this year for the Friday event at the Pomona Fairplex are punk bands Bad Religion, NOFX, Guttermouth and many others. Lyman mentioned post-hardcore A Day to Remember, powerpop group TV/TV, metalcore The Devil Wears Prada and pop group Lights as artists to watch.

Lyman, who grew up in Claremont and graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 1984 with a recreation administration degree, has taken a lot of criticism from artists that his tour has too many advertisements.

“I’ve been doing this for 15 years,” Lyman said. “Some tours are still going and some have ended. We’re not for everyone. There’s room for everyone.”

Rancho Cucamonga-based band Fiasco! will perform on the KIA “Kevin Says” Stage.

Bassist-pianist-vocalist Daniel Durston of the pop punk/rock and alternative group said, “We’re going to try to and put Rancho Cucamonga on the map.”

Durston, 22, said he’s been playing music since the age of 10. He has been in bands since age 12 and met the other members as a 13-year-old at an Ontario Battle of the Bands event.

The 2004 Chaffey High School graduate described his band’s journey to the Warped Tour as “real hard. Some people think it’s easy but it took us years to do this.”

Lyman, the Warped Tour founder, said the key to the successful event is simple.

“You treat the audience the best you can and give them special things each day. I think the Warped Tour still does that. Just musically and educationally. People walk out, and they want to come back.
