El Monte Union High School District Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Nick Salerno, has been appointed superintendent by the El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees. Salerno becomes the first graduate of the district to serve as its superintendent.
After attending Citrus College, Salerno transferred to Cal Poly Pomona where he received his bachelor of science degree and secondary teaching credential. He went on to earn a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University as well as a pupil personnel services credential and administrative services credential.
A graduate of Arroyo High School, Salerno began his teaching career there in 1976 where he taught math, science, and physical education. He also coached football and baseball. Appointed counselor at Arroyo in 1987, Salerno became Assistant Principal of Activities in 1988. In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Principal of Student Services.
In 1991, Salerno moved on to El Monte High School when the board appointed him Assistant Principal of Instruction. Salerno became principal in 1992 and under his leadership, El Monte High School was named both a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School.
In 1999, he moved to the district office as Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and in 2000, was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
A second-generation American, Salerno?s grandparents arrived in this country as poor immigrants.
“My grandparents did not have any formal schooling,” said Salerno. “They did not speak English and had to learn the language upon their arrival.”
Salerno is the proud recipient of the H. B. McDaniel Outstanding Counseling Award, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and Cal Poly Pomona’s Alumni of the Year Award. He has also served as a mentor teacher.
“All of us at the district are here for the same reason, the benefit of our students. We want to make sure they receive the best education possible,” said Salerno. “Our goal is to promote success for every student, every minute, every day.”
“Mr. Salerno is known for his innovative programs and his ability to work well with all staff members,” said superintendent Kathy Furnald. “We wish him the best of luck in his new position.”
Salerno replaces Furnald who announced her retirement effective July 1, 2009 after 39 years with the district.
