MEMORANDUM FROM: Manuel Perez, Director Career Center
FACTS ABOUT THE NEW MINIMUM WAGE
The purpose of this memo is to clarify department responsibilities relative to implementing the new minimum wage. We have attached a copy of the "Student Employment On-Campus Job Classifications and Salary Guidelines" form for your information.
- Minimum wage rate changes are mandatory. By law, the minimum wage must be implemented. The other pay rates on the chart are guidelines to assist departments in determining a fair and equitable wage for your student workers. These guides are not mandatory, but should be implemented as your budget allows.
- The Job Classifications have been established to assist you in applying a specific wage rate to the skills required to do the job. Please review your job descriptions to insure the job requirements still coordinate with the established classifications.
- Pay scales for Work Study student assistants, Bridge student assistants and student assistants should be consistent. A pay differential should not exist when job requirements, experience, and skills are comparable. All employers are responsible to pay a fair wage to their student employees.
- Student assistants' on-the-job performance should be reviewed and evaluated periodically. It is suggested that this happen after 325 hours of work, or sooner at your discretion. Please use the recommended step rates when initiating a salary increase.
I hope the above information will answers your questions and concerns relating the recent wage increases and employing students on campus. Providing employment for our students here on campus is crucial to their success, and also provides the campus community with a skilled and economical work force.
