Policy
The Music Department recognizes only senior recitals/presentations as curriculum-driven obligations for students. All other student recitals/presentations will be viewed as extra-curricular.
1. Senior recital project presentations will normally take place in Room 191, a facility specifically designed for recital presentations. The department will not pay for the use of any other performance location. Other senior project presentations will take place in a department facility that is most appropriate.
2. Beyond the services of the department technician and department accompanist, the department will not pay the expenses of any support personnel that the presenter of the recital/presentation wishes to engage.
3. To the best of its ability to do so, the department will provide equipment that it has in its inventory. The department will not purchase or rent any equipment that a student may wish to utilize for a senior recital/presentation project.
4. Students must make application to do a senior project, a project that is constructed along guidelines provided for in the Course Outline.
5. Senior projects normally last a minimum of 45 minutes of performance time (exclusive of time between numbers, applause, set up, etc.) They normally should not exceed 75 minutes performance time. Exceptions must be approved in advance (as part of the application process).
6. The senior project application must be submitted to the faculty committee. To enable the department to plan for recital projects, plans for all senior recital projects must be finalized during the first 4 weeks of Fall Quarter. The plan includes: date, location, program selection in draft form, production plan in draft form. The plan needs to be incorporated into the application.
7. Selection of a recital/presentation date must be done in consultation with the senior project committee, chair and staff who may be involved (accompanist, technician) to determine the feasibility of the date selected. Faculty will provide a list of available recital dates. Recital dates will be reserved on a first come/first serve basis with approved signatures.
8.Due to the high volume of end of quarter activities that involve the Music Department as a whole, there will be no senior projects presented during the last two weeks of any Quarter. There will be no exceptions to this policy.
9. At least one month before the recital/presentation date, a student will be required to present a pre-recital jury for the senior project faculty committee. "Pre-recital/presentation" is defined here to mean: performance of a representative sampling that demonstrates satisfactory progress for public performance in one month. The faculty may require the recital to be rescheduled if the pre-recital jury does not provide evidence that the performance will be successful. Any other "events" that are part of preparing the student for the recital (partial performance of the recital repertoire, evaluative performances to enable the selection of other repertoire, etc.) will be considered advisory.
10. All senior projects (recitals and presentations) will have printed programs. Printed programs must conform to a departmentally established format. All materials (all translations, explanatory notes, etc.) required for the printed program must be submitted to the Department Publicist two weeks before the performance date.
11. Senior Recital/Presentation publicity may be limited to producing low-cost flyers (2 color, 8 1/2" x 11", etc.) and informing local newspapers. To present a consistent department image, no "outside" resources are to be used to create publicity that exceeds the scope of the departmentally provided service. Students may elect to send invitations to friends and family.
12. No admission can be charged to a senior recital/presentation. No student products or promotions are to be offered for sale at the event.
13. Receptions may be provided by friends or family of the student recitalist/presentor. See reception policy.
14. Videotaping of recitals/presentations must be done in consultation and coordination with the Department Technician requirements.
