The Harvey Mudd College American Gamelan to perform at Cal Poly Pomona

The Harvey Mudd College American Gamelan is an ensemble of instruments from the classical Javanese orchestra known as the gamelan, but which plays new works by composers outside of that tradition. While these composers may be informed by traditional Javanese works, they have adapted this ensemble for their own expression, a "tradition" established in the United States by Lou Harrison and Bill Colvig, who named their ensembles "American Gamelan."

My goal is to expose Cal Poly Pomona students and local audiences to a great variety of artists, styles and repertoire.

Mike Viola returns to Cal Poly Pomona for concert and master class to benefit the Music Industry Studies program

Songwriting genius Mike Viola returns to Cal Poly Pomona University for a benefit concert and songwriting master class. Proceeds from the concert will fund scholarships for students in the Music Industry Studies program. Mike Viola will also hold a songwriting master class with Prof. Arthur Winer from 3:00–5:00 PM the afternoon before the concert. The concert is $15 general admission / $10 students, and the master class is free.

Charles Lindsley Memorial Vocal Scholarship Fund Raiser set for Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 8:00pm

Each year students and alumni in the vocal area of Cal Poly Pomona’s Music Department gather to remember and honor Dr. Charles E. Lindsley, one of the founding members of the Music Department. Dr. Lindsley was on the faculty for over 25 years and created the Kellogg Chambers Singers and the Cal Poly Pomona Opera Workshop. He was a well-known voice teacher, and many of his students have professional careers in opera and musical theatre.

Cal Poly Pomona Music Department awards $29,850 in scholarships for the 2009/2010 Academic Year

The Cal Poly Pomona Music Department will award $29,850 in scholarships this year, once again increasing the amount give to music students, awarding 95 scholarships to 54 students, ranging from $200 to $2000 each.

International performer and recording artist, Edward Auer, to present an all Chopin piano recital and piano master class for students of Cal Poly Pomona’s music program.

International performer, recording artist, and professor at Indiana University Bloomington, Edward Auer, will present a Piano Master Class on Monday, April 27th from 12-3pm followed on Tuesday, April 28th with an all Chopin piano recital. Auer is the leading Chopin interpreter and the first American to win a prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. The performance is at 8:00pm in the Music Recital Hall and tickets are $15 general admission and $10 student admission. Tickets are available online at www.csupomona.tix.com/ or at the box office 45 minutes prior to showtime.

Cal Poly Pomona Piano program director, Professor Nadia Shpachenko, will start off the Spring 2009 music season on Tuesday, April 14th performing “ROMANCE OF THE NIGHTINGALE” with special guest artist Jerome Summers, acclaimed Canadian clarinetist, composer and conductor. The duo will perform works by Chausson, Brahms, Baker, and Rachmaninoff.
