Pianist Michael Garson to Lecture and Perform
Pianist and composer Michael Garson, who has performed with the Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Gwen Stefani and Stan Getz, and toured with David Bowie over the last four decades, will perform and lecture at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Feb. 4.
Garson's master class lecture, which is free, is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. At 8 p.m. in the same location, the Michael Garson Trio will perform.

Making Modern Music
From composing to recording to performing, technology is integral to the music industry. It's used to manufacture instruments, broadcast sound, and package and market artists and performers.
"Anyone involved in any way with music on any level is dealing with technology in some way," says music Professor Mark Chubb. "I can't think of a way that the music industry does not use technology."

American Gamelan Performs on Campus
Harvey Mudd College American Gamelan performs Friday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. in Cal Poly Pomona's Music Recital Hall.
The American Gamelan is an ensemble of instruments from the classical Javanese orchestra known as the gamelan, but it performs new works by composers outside of that tradition. While these works may be based in traditional Javanese works, they have been adapted for this ensemble's own expression, a tradition established in the United States by Lou Harrison and Bill Colvig.

Oscar Nominated Musician to Perform Benefit Concert
Oscar-nominated singer/songwriter Mike Viola will present a songwriting master class followed by a benefit concert at Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 19.
Viola is best known for producing the signature track for the movie "That Thing You Do!" and writing songs for the "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" soundtrack. He also has an independent label, Good Morning Monkey Records, which features his and other artists' recordings.

Chamber Music Festival Premieres 2 Works
Cal Poly Pomona's music department presents the first-ever Shpachenko & Friends Chamber Music Festival on Wednesday, Nov. 18, the start of a series of ongoing collaborations among music faculty and distinguished guest artists. Created by Music Professor Nadia Shpachenko, the festival will present quarterly chamber performances featuring Shpachenko and guest musicians.

Grammy Winner to Give Master Class
From his simple beginnings in Honolulu to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Daniel Ho has worked in all aspects of the music industry: producer, singer, songwriter, performer, composer, arranger, engineer and record company owner. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Ho will share his expertise during a master class on Thursday, April 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.
