The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) is home of the exercise physiology faculty. The HPL is equiped to handle various types of physiological testing. Most exercise phsyiology laboratories occur in this room, as well as laboratories for the motor learning and motor development courses. Contact Dr. Michael Liang for information about our Exercise Science program.
The HPL is equipped with standard types of equipment. There are three treadmills, including a heavy duty treadmill. There are also several Monark ergometers located in the lab. The lab is arranged for teaching with chalk boards and white boards arranged for both lecture and data collection situations.
The HPL has two metabolic carts for the recording
of expired gases during exercise. There is a twelve-lead EKG recording
device. A small wet laboratory can determine blood lactate and glucose.
More sophisticated biochemical marker analyses are possible in conjuction
with other laboratories on campus. Body composition is assessed with skin
calipers and bio-electrical impedance measures. A simple electrical stimulation
unit is used for studying muscle function. This device can also operform
simple electromyographical recordings.
The HPL has a dynamometer. Equipment for measuring motor skills are also available inluding reaction timers and stabilometers. Students are regularly involved in data collection and analysis for course laboratories, senior projects, and faculty research.
