KHP Department Chair
Tom Spalding, PhD
Welcome to KHP
Welcome to the Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department! You have
chosen a great major that will lead you to an incredible career in
a variety of settings. Our main goal is to facilitate a timely graduation
for you while providing a quality education in the field of kinesiology
and health promotion. Regardless if you're an entering freshman,
an entering transfer student, or if you're already a CPP student
and are changing your major, we're glad that you made the decision
to join the KHP Department. Here's what to expect during your
first year with us:
- If you're a "change of major" student (a current
CPP student who changed from another major), you'll meet one-on-one
with the Department Chair. If you're an entering freshman or
transfer student, you'll meet with the department chair in
a group setting. At this meeting, you'll receive the name and
contact information of your academic advisor.
- You will be invited to come to a pizza party for all KHP majors,
staff, and faculty at the beginning of Fall Quarter. There will be
free pizza and soda for all new KHP majors.
- You'll receive the KHP Student Handbook during your meeting
with the Department Chair. Just about everything you need to know
about how to get that diploma is provided in our student handbook.
- You'll meet one-on-one with your academic advisor for the
Initial Advisory Meeting. You'll create an individualized
Graduation Plan prior to your meeting so that your advisor can review
it. After your Initial Advisory Meeting, you'll be required
to check-in with your advisor once a year (at the beginning of every
Spring quarter).
- You'll be given an opportunity to join the KHP
Club. The
KHP Club is a great way to network and socialize with other KHP majors.
Also, the KHP Club provides experiences for professional growth and
development.
- You'll be given an opportunity to participate in the Student
Mentor Program, in which a junior or senior KHP club member will
be assigned to you. Your mentor will contact you at least twice each
quarter for your first year. The purpose of the mentor program is
to provide you with suggestions from fellow students (i.e. study
tips, how to survive the stress of college life, etc.)
- You'll enroll in KIN 180: Professions in Kinesiology & Health
Promotion in order to help you choose which track that you'd
like to follow. The primary purpose of this class is to provide
information on the myriad of career opportunities in the kinesiology
and health promotion fields.
- You'll be invited to participate in the KHP SportsFest, where
KHP students and faculty get together and participate in a variety
of sporting events for some healthy competition with other student
clubs on campus as well as other KHP majors from other CSU campuses.
We're excited to have you join us
and hope that your experiences with KHP will be
rewarding. We look forward to seeing you at Graduation!
