The English Minor

Any English course you are currently enrolled in (except ENG 104 or its equivalent) may be applied toward the minor in English, which may be taken with any major offered by this university. The minor in English provides a fleixible program of courses frequently taught.

Why minor in English?

First there are career advantages. One of the most common and persistent complaints among employers of college graduates is that graduates lack the verbal skills to advance beyond entry-level to management and executive positions. The English minor can provide you a solid background in literature and in writing and should enhance your prospects not only for a good job, but for career advancement.

Second, if you plan to pursue advanced study (for example, law scholl, medical school, or graduate business school), the English minor will complement your major and strengthen your credentials. Since writing is essential in postbaccalaureate work, your training as an English minor should serve you well.

The above are important practical benefits. There are others. As a college student, you learn more than a career, more than a way to make a living. You should learn as much as possible about yourself and the world in which you live. "Know yourself." the writers of antiquity admonished; "the unexamined life is not worth living." How does one acquire self-understanding? The study of literature--"the best that has been thought and said"--and the discipline of writing can provide you with the most stimulating, liberating, and valuable education of all.

How many units for the minor in English? 32 units

You select two courses from a group of British and Amercian literature surveys. In addition, you select 24 units (12 of which must be upper division: 300 or 400 level) from among nearly all the other courses offered by the department, including science fiction, creative writing, advanced composition, linguistics, poetry, drama, and fiction. You shape the minor to match your interests.

The completed minor is acknowledged on your graduating transcript.
