The Friends of Pomona Public Library will provide information and an introduction to the "Thanks for the Memories" contest for participants in middle school/junior high through adult, working alone or in pairs. Discover what life was like in the 1930s in the U.S., and what is important in your life in 2008. Five weekly contests, with prizes each week and grand prizes awarded at the November 8th celebration.

Author Talk
Author Talk: Kerry Madden, author of upcoming young adult biography of Harper Lee
Location: Pomona Public Library Public Conference Room, Pomona, CA 91766
Kerry Madden, will discuss her upcoming young adult biography of Harper Lee and lead a writing workshop for young adults. Ms. Madden has authored several young adult novels, including “Gentle’s Holler”, “Louisiana’s Song”, and “Jessie’s Mountain”. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Kerry's skills have been honed everywhere from the wealthiest private schools to juvenile hall. Her award-winning work with Teen Moms resulted in a series of theatrical productions written by young mothers. She is currently tutoring two groups of foster kids in Los Angeles as well as teaching Introduction to Fiction Writing at the UCLA Writers Program. Mrs. Nelson’s Toy and Book Shop will be on hand with Ms. Madden’s young adult novels for purchase.

The Historical Society of Pomona Valley will host Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout in the film, "To Kill a Mockingbird". Mary Badham will speak about her experience in the film and the impact it had on her life. The speaker will be followed by a reception and garments from the period of the book will be on display.

Author Talk and Reception
Author Talk: Ray Zone, "How Reading Comic Books Led to My Becoming a Writer!"
Location: Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center Theatre, 300 W. Second Street, Pomona, CA 91766
Ray Zone is a writer, 3-D artist and film producer. He is the author of "3-D Filmmakers", "Stereoscopic Cinema and the Origins of 3-D Film, 1838-1952", and "New Wave King, the Cinematography of Laszlo Kovacs, ASC". Ray has been writing since he was in high school when he wrote a column for the local newspaper. He has produced or published more than 130 3-D comic books and is a contributing writer to ArtScene and other periodicals.

David Kipen, Literature Director for National Reading Initiatives, and Program Director of the Big Read, National Endowment for the Arts will be our special guest as he drops into Pomona to celebrate our Big Read success!
