Academy for Literacy through the Arts

- Uses the arts as a vehicle to improve students writing abilities, cognitive thinking, and communication skills
- Provides hands-on projects that ask students to identify and study important relationships in their lives
- Brings family and heritage into students projects to instill pride and increase self esteem
The Academy for Literacy through the Arts provides youth an opportunity to succeed as a way to build their sense of worth and achievement, as well as becoming valued, contributing community members. The Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center provides a safe haven where children and youth can develop constructive relationships with their peers. Small classes are offered in order for youth to develop close, interactive, mentoring relationships with caring adults.
The Academy for Literacy through the Arts offers low-cost and free out-of-school programs and classes in addition to a comprehensive Summer Arts Academy. Need-based scholarships are available for all classes and programs. No child is turned away for lack of funds.
Arts education promotes learning, creativity, skills, and knowledge of the visual and performing arts, learning that is valuable in itself. Through the arts, students can explore socio-political ideas, develop understanding of other cultures, and develop positive social behaviors such as empathy and attitudes against prejudice and racism(*)
