Dr. Barbara J. Way, Dean

Dr. Way earned her Ph.D. in political science in 1983 from the University of California, Riverside. Her fields of study include American and state politics, public policy, gender and politics, and public administration with a major emphasis on energy conservation policy. Dr. Way is an established authority on public policy. Her work in this area includes an edited book, chapters in textbooks, and numerous articles. Dr. Way has also examined gender differences in political ambition, including women's participation in politics in State of Arizona. Her findings were presented in several articles. Dr. Way has held teaching positions at Texas A & M University, Arizona State University-West Campus, and Cal Poly Pomona. The award for Outstanding Public Administration Educator, bestowed on Dr. Way in 1993 from the American Society for Public Administration, testifies to her work in educating students. Dr. Way brought her knowledge and versatility to the administrative arena when she became Chair of the Political Science Department, at Cal Poly Pomona during the 1991/92 academic year. Advancing rapidly, Dr. Way was appointed Associate Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences in 1992, becoming Dean of the college in April 1996. As Dean, she has recently spearheaded initiatives promoting international educational experiences for faculty and students in Mexico, Cuba, London, Paris, Spain, and Zimbabwe. Aside from her administrative and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Way was the founder and president of the Urban Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association. She was highly instrumental in establishing the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, and has also chaired numerous campus committees, including the very successful Founder's Day Committee, which brought both community and campus constituencies together in honor of Cal Poly Pomona's founding. She is currently a board member of the Pomona Central Business District, the Pomona Leadership Forum, and the Cal Poly Pomona Diversity Advisory Committee. She is also chair of the Cultural Alliance of Pomona, chair of the GIS Literate Campus Initiative, co-chair of the Academic Advising Task Force, and is involved in many other activities.

 

Dr. Dale Turner, Associate Dean for Academic Programs

Dale Turner is the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and a member of the Department of Philosophy in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Dr. Turner received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from California State University, Fullerton in 1987 and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Riverside in 2000.

His primary areas of research include argumentation and fallacy theory, the nature of deep disagreement, the role of argument in public reason, and philosophical issues in education. Dr. Turner’s work in these areas includes numerous conference presentations, journal articles, and co-editing special issues of the journals Argumentation and Informal Logic. Dr. Turner is a member of several professional organizations including the American Philosophical Association, the Philosophy of Education Society, the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking, and the Ontario Society for the Study of Argument. He has long-standing teaching interests in critical thinking, epistemology, philosophy of education, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and the philosophy of childhood.

Dr. Sharon Hilles, Associate Dean for Academic Personnel and Resources

Sharon Hilles is the Associate Dean for Academic Personnel and Resources, and a Professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages where her teaching responsibilities include classes in grammar, linguistics, language acquisition, history of English, and graduate courses in the department’s Teaching English as a Second Language program.  Dr. Hilles received her Bachelor’s degree in German from the University of California Los Angeles in 1975.  Her MA in TESL and her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics are from UCLA as well.

Her primary areas of research include the development of English, English grammar, and English usage.  She is also interested in first and second language acquisition and teaching English as a second language to adults.  Dr. Hilles’ work in these areas has been presented at professional conferences, in journal articles, in workshops and in several books. She has served as  grammar consultant for a number of publications, and is a member of several professional organizations.
